Micronesia Joins the Fight Against European Coal Print

The Prunerov coal power plant in Czech Republic, the target of on-going anti-coal campaigning, has a new adversary: the pacific island state of Micronesia.

As a collection of hundreds of small islands, much of Micronesian territory lies just above sea level. With ocean water levels projected to rise about 1 meter alone this century given current global warming temperature models, the loss and destruction of land and homes to this man-made disaster seems likely. "Worst case" scenario projections suggest an oceanic rise of nearly 2 meters, a catastrophic end for this nation that we may see in our lifetimes.

Hoping to force action and curb climate warming trends, the government of Micronesia has filed an international legal briefing against the Czech Prunerov power station. The plant, in the planning stages of enlargement, is one of the dirtiest coal-fired stations in the world, itself ranking higher than more than 100 nations in greenhouse gas emissions.

Czech NGOs have battled for nearly 2 years in efforts to stop or clean up the plant, and welcome the international support in this effort.
