ECF is happy to announce the launch of lowcarbonfacts.eu, a website that aims to promote the growing body of evidence showing why increasing Europe’s climate policy ambition is beneficial to the European economy.
A handful of arguments focused on the negative effects of increasing the EU’s climate policy ambition – whether increasing Europe’s emission reduction goal, tightening the Emissions Trading System, or introducing new policies to reduce emissions – currently dominate public discourse. These arguments build on the exaggerated concerns of a few industrial sectors and remain unchallenged by most policy makers, afraid of losing jobs and money in the current economic context. As a result, policy debates are biased by a few commonly accepted myths and misleadingly focused on minimising costs and protecting vested interests. This contrasts with the growing evidence that increasing the EU’s climate policy ambition is the winning industrial and economic strategy for Europe. Strong climate targets will help reduce emissions, energy import dependency, energy bills and health costs. Supported by a clear and consistent set of policies, they can shape expectations and provide incentives for redirecting and increasing investments, leading to innovation, job creation and economic growth.
This new online resource brings together key arguments as to why climate action is good for Europe. It articulates these arguments around eight myths that tend to dominate the policy debate, providing references to recent research, relevant news articles and events. The website gives users the option to rate and comment on all arguments. Its content will be updated as new research is published, and new complementary material will be added regularly.
